Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART): A Different Path to Healing:
If you've been carrying the weight of trauma, anxiety, painful memories, or experiences that seem to keep resurfacing no matter how hard you try to move forward, you're not alone. Many people come to therapy feeling exhausted by the impact these experiences have on their daily lives, relationships, and sense of well-being.
I'm Lexi Eller, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with specialized training in trauma recovery, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Through my work with first responders, veterans, survivors of trauma, and individuals navigating life's challenges, I've seen firsthand how powerful the right therapeutic approach can be in helping people find relief and reclaim their lives.
What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals reduce distress related to trauma, anxiety, depression, phobias, panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, substance use concerns, and other psychological stressors.
One of the reasons many clients are drawn to ART is that it often works more quickly than traditional talk therapy. Rather than spending months repeatedly discussing painful experiences, ART helps the brain process and reorganize distressing memories so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity.
How Does ART Work?
ART uses a combination of guided eye movements and therapeutic techniques to help the brain process difficult experiences in a new way.
During an ART session, you may:
Recall a distressing memory while following guided eye movements.
Identify the images, sensations, or emotions connected to that experience.
Replace distressing mental images with more positive, empowering, or neutral ones through a process called image rescripting.
Allow your brain to reprocess the memory so it feels less overwhelming and disruptive.
Importantly, ART does not erase memories. Instead, it helps remove the emotional distress attached to them, allowing you to remember the event without feeling as though you're reliving it.
Why Do Clients Like ART?
Many clients appreciate ART because:
They remain in control throughout the entire process.
They do not have to share every detail of a traumatic experience.
Sessions are structured and goal-oriented.
Relief can often occur in a relatively short period of time.
It can feel less emotionally draining than traditional talk therapy.
While emotions and physical sensations can arise during processing, many clients report that the experience feels more manageable than they expected and often leave sessions feeling lighter, calmer, and more hopeful.
How Long Does ART Take?
Every person's healing journey is unique, but ART is designed to be a brief therapy approach. Some individuals experience significant relief in as little as 1–5 sessions, with sessions typically lasting 50–120 minutes, depending on the client's needs, goals, and pace. However, if there are various targets or a bigger impact, then you can look into doing an ART intensive for 2-3 hours if necessary.
Is ART Right for You?
ART may be a good fit if you:
Feel stuck in painful memories or past experiences.
Want relief without repeatedly retelling your story.
Experience anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, panic, or intrusive thoughts.
Are looking for an effective, evidence-based approach that can produce results more quickly than traditional therapy.
